In June 2020, OPO published its inaugural officer-involved shooting report.
This report examined each officer-involved shooting incident that took place in 2018 and involved APD. The report's purpose was to analyze data and patterns related to these events and recommend areas for improvement. Click hereopen_in_new for the full report.
OPO’s analysis revealed that all but 1 incident involved a mental health component. Additionally, the analysis revealed a disparate concentration of officer-involved shooting incidents affecting ethnic minorities and historically minority-majority areas of Austin. For example, of the 12 incidents that occurred in 2018, 8 involved ethnic minorities. Additionally, each of the 5 fatal incidents caused by police involved ethnic minorities in central, east, or southeast Austin.
